The CEO of the top government think tank further stated that the overall geopolitical and economic environment is favorable for the country. Addressing reporters after the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, Subrahmanyam said, “As I speak, we are the fourth largest economy. As I speak, we are a 4 trillion dollar economy.”

Citing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Subrahmanyam said that today India is larger than Japan.
Subrahmanyam said, “Only the United States, China, and Germany are larger than India, and if we stick to our plans and vision, we will become the third largest economy in 2.5-3 years.” This comes after a promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, in which he pledged that India would become the third largest economy during his third term. In 2024, PM Modi returned to power for a third term after securing 240 seats in the Lok Sabha elections held between April and June. During a CII event after the budget, Modi remarked that India is the fifth largest economy, and the day is not far when it will become the third largest economy. PM Modi said, “When we came to power in 2014, the biggest question was how to bring the economy back on track. The situation before 2014 was fragile; scams worth lakhs of crores had taken place. We have pulled the Indian economy out of a very sensitive situation.”
